The Best Streaming Platform for Musical Adaptations This Christmas

The holidays are the perfect time to curl up with a hot cocoa and watch your favorite films, and there’s no better genre to get you into the festive spirit than musical adaptations. Streaming platforms have a great selection of musical films this season, but which are offering the best mix of musical adaptations to watch during Christmas

A new study from CS gaming experts clash.gg calculated the number of musical adaptations on each streaming service to find which has the most titles.

Tubi hosts the most stage-to-screen musical adaptations with twelve titles available to watch. The platform mainly showcases classic titles from the 50s such as South Pacific and Kiss Me Kate. If you’re looking for something more modern, they have newer options with the 2014 version of Annie and the romantic comedy musical starring Anna Kendrick’s The Last Five Years.

The only catch is that Tubi is an ad-supported platform which could interrupt the musical magic.

In second is FuboTV with nine adaptions readily available. Notable titles include both the 1961 and 2021 West Side Story films, Chicago, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Paramount+ lands in third with eight musical adaptations available to watch. One of the most successful adaptations, Grease, is ready to watch, alongside newer options such as the newly released 2024 Mean Girls.

In fourth is Max with seven titles on its roster from classics to modern hits. The 1986 musical A Chorus Line can introduce you to the classics of musical adaptations, while The Color Purple and Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights offer the vibrancy of modern-day musicals.

Peacock places joint fifth with six titles, including the critically acclaimed Les Misérables and the classic Oklahoma! from a bygone era.

Amazon Prime Video also features six tempting musical adaptations. You will find more pre-80s adaptations such as Funny Girl and South Pacific, alongside the recent 2021 film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

Next up, in sixth, is Netflix hosting the most recent titles with the likes of family favorite Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, the infamous 2019Cats, and another Lin Manuel Miranda success Tick, Tick… Boom!

The seventh best streaming service for musical adaptations is Disney+. While the platform offers a rich collection of musicals, it features just three notable stage-to-screen adaptations. These include the timeless Julie Andrews-led The Sound of Music, and the star-studded Into the Woods.

At the bottom of the list, Hulu ranks eighth, offering just one musical adaptation—but it’s a standout classic: The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Commenting on the findings, Gabriele Asaro, Head of SEO and research of clash.gg said, “As the holiday season draws near, many people are looking for comforting, feel-good films to enjoy with loved ones. Musical adaptations, with their uplighting stories and memorable songs, are the perfect way to add a bit of magic to your festive movie lineup.

“While some streaming services may not have a vast library of stage-to-screen adaptations, they still offer a rich collection of musical content. Whether it’s beloved musical adaptations or original screen musicals, they can provide hours of entertainment during the holidays.

“Musicals have a unique ability to transport audiences, offering not just captivating stories, but also incredible performances and unforgettable songs. Adaptations specifically offer something truly special by bringing Broadway stories to audiences who may not see them otherwise.

“For anyone looking to dive deeper into the world of musicals this Christmas, these platforms are the perfect place to start.”
