A Guide to Effective New Tech Adoption for State and Local Governments

State and local governments are consistently looking for modern technology solutions to improve the resident experience through streamlined, time-saving technology, and self-service solutions. So much so, that according to recent research, 95% of government agency leaders plan to invest in emerging technologies.

But, with all the buzzwords and new technology trends, government leaders have challenges identifying the appropriate solutions that will positively impact their residents. To ensure that the technologies they adopt result in a true return on investment, it’s paramount that they first understand the difference between which technology trends are worthwhile and which are not.

Tech Adoption Mistakes to Avoid: Don’t Get Caught up in Buzzwords

State and local government leaders focused on digital transformation are always aiming to implement modern technology that will enhance the resident experience while saving time for employees. However, when it comes to choosing what technology to invest in and implement, these leaders mustn’t jump on emerging trends without fully understanding what positive business outcomes they will add to their community services.

Instead of diving headfirst into these trending technologies, local governments should focus on identifying and working to address specific community needs, and then determine which valuable solutions will offer measurable return-on-investment.

Starting with pilot programs that address pain points and targeted use cases can help avoid fads while ensuring the technology delivers tangible, long-term benefits. Engaging trusted vendors who keep close tabs on the industry and technology landscape can help local governments make informed choices and ensure the solution’s sustainability.

Transformative Technologies Worth Government Investment

How can government leaders ensure they are practicing due diligence when it comes to technology investments? A strong starting point is to develop a checklist that identifies the specific outcomes they aim to achieve within their community, and internally, along with the solutions that will support those outcomes. Here are a few examples:

  • Ensure transparency: There’s an increasing expectation of internal, cross-departmental transparency within the government. State and local governments can introduce Data Sharing as a Program, to improve efficiency, enhance decision-making, and foster collaboration across departments and with other levels of government. Data Sharing as a Program can greatly enhance cross-department collaboration, enabling more data-informed decisions and ultimately helping state and local governments better meet community needs. It eliminates data silos and allows for insights that weren’t possible with limited, separate data sets. The best approaches include thoughtful consideration of data governance and security, in addition to the technical decisions.
  • Prioritize the cloud for streamlined workflows: Moving to the cloud provides many benefits for state and local governments, including cost savings, enhanced collaboration, and seamless integration across various platforms and devices.
  • Embrace the Total Experience model: When looking at experience models, they’re traditionally run separately. However, the idea of Total Experience has evolved as a key trend for government technology. This consists of combining customer experience, employee experience, multi-experience, and user experience. It’s estimated that, by 2026, the Total Experience model will reduce workflow uncertainty by 90%. Additionally, we’ll see metrics aligned to satisfaction, like customer and employee experience, increase by 50%.
  • Implement digital government process: Digital government, which is the use of digital technology to streamline and optimize the delivery of government services to the public, is key for ensuring administrative processes are more efficient. Many benefits come along with running a digital government service workflow:
  • Reduced costs
  • Faster, and more accurate, process times
  • Improved safety and compliance
  • Increased, more meaningful community engagement
  • Enhanced collaboration
  • Community development growth

Many state and local governments are operating on inconsistent procedures, which negatively impacts the community and workforce. Moving forward, state and local governments need to prioritize implementing innovative technology to ensure enhanced resident engagement and trust, and an improved employee experience
