Super Micro Shares Plummet

Super Micro Computer’s shares dropped over 12% on Thursday following reports that the Justice Department has launched an investigation into the company, a key player benefiting from the artificial intelligence surge.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the probe is still in its early stages and follows Hindenburg Research’s announcement in late August that it had taken a short position in the company. Hindenburg claimed to have uncovered “new evidence of accounting manipulation” in its report, although CNBC has not independently verified these allegations.

Distance Technologies Raises Millions in Funding

Distance Technologies, a Finnish startup focused on integrating mixed-reality technology into car windshields and airplane cockpits, has secured €10 million ($11.1 million) in funding from GV, Alphabet’s venture capital arm, along with other investors.

The seed round, led by GV, also saw additional contributions from existing investors FOV Ventures and Maki.vc, the tech company revealed to CNBC on Thursday.

OpenAI Considers a For-Profit Approach

OpenAI’s board is reportedly exploring plans to restructure the company into a for-profit business, according to a source who requested anonymity due to ongoing discussions. The company would maintain its non-profit division as a distinct entity, the source said.

This new structure is expected to simplify matters for investors and provide OpenAI employees with better opportunities for liquidity, the source added.

Nvidia Acquires Seattle Startup

OctoAI, a Seattle-based software tech startup specializing in tools to optimize the development and deployment of generative AI models, has been acquired by chip giant Nvidia. OctoAI’s website now features a banner stating, “OctoAI is now NVIDIA.”

OctoAI informed its customers via email that it will cease the commercial availability of its services as of October 31.

Starfish Space Awarded NASA’s Prize

Tukwila, Wash.-based Starfish Space has secured a three-year, $15 million contract from NASA for a mission focused on conducting close-up inspections of defunct tech satellites in orbit.

These inspections, set to begin in 2027 using Starfish’s Otter spacecraft, could pave the way for more advanced missions involving the repair or removal of inactive satellites.
