Lots has happened this past week in the tech world! With the FFC claiming potential internet price increases beginning in May, Meta launching a new AI chip, Google investing in connectivity with Japan, and more, there’s much to catch up on. So, let’s get started!
FFC Claims Potential Internet Price Increase
The U.S. government has stated that it will only be able to cover approximately half of the entitlements for low-income Americans under a widely utilized federal benefits scheme, which is facing a depletion of funds. This looming crisis poses a severe threat of pushing millions of households into economic turmoil in a matter of weeks.
Many believe the recent announcement by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) marks the tangible repercussions of Congress’ inability to prolong the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a pandemic-initiated initiative offering monthly tech discounts on internet services to over 23 million US households, encompassing seniors, veterans, and students.
Meta Launches New AI Chip
On April 10, Meta Platforms revealed specifics about the upcoming iteration of the company’s proprietary artificial intelligence accelerator chip.
The significance of this development lies in Meta’s proactive response to the increasing demand for computing power required to operate AI features across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Earlier this year, Reuters reported Meta’s intentions to introduce a new version of its custom tech data center chip, internally dubbed “Artemis,” aimed at addressing this surge in computing demands.
Google Invests in Connectivity With Japan
Google announced a $1 billion investment to enhance digital connectivity between the U.S. and Japan through the installation of two new subsea cables, as confirmed by the firm on Wednesday during a visit by the Japanese prime minister aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
These two subsea cables, named Proa and Taihei, are designed to bolster connectivity not only between the U.S. and Japan but also among various Pacific island countries and territories, Google stated in a blog post. Both nations also intend to contribute funds to support the provision of subsea cables in the Pacific region.
ASUS Releases New Laptop Models
ASUS has introduced two fresh laptop variants: the Asus Vivobook S series and the Zenbook 14 OLED (UM3406). These laptops feature OLED displays and are powered by cutting-edge AMD and Intel processors.
The new chips suggest enhanced capabilities in handling AI tasks, facilitated by dedicated neural processing units. Additionally, these chips promise improved power efficiency, resulting in faster gaming, multitasking, and editing experiences. Notably, the keyboards are equipped with dedicated Copilot keys, providing convenient access to Windows 11’s AI tools.
