A recent survey by Gameland.gg reveals that 64% of Americans admit to yelling at their virtual assistants at times. The study, which surveyed 2,000 US residents, highlights widespread frustration with these digital helpers.
Alexa Gets Yelled at the Most
When it comes to which virtual assistant faces the most ire, Amazon’s Alexa tops the list. A notable 70% of Alexa users admit to raising their voice on their device. Samsung’s Bixby follows closely, with 60% of its users expressing similar frustrations. Apple’s Siri is not far behind, with 57% of users admitting to yelling at their devices. Among the most widely used virtual assistants, Google Assistant stands out with the lowest percentage of users yelling at it, at 53%.
Moreover, the survey indicates that women are more vocal about their frustrations, with 62% admitting to yelling at their virtual assistant compared to 53% of men.
Wisconsin Leads in Frustration
The survey also reveals significant geographical differences in how people interact with this tech. Wisconsin leads the nation with 77% of residents admitting they occasionally shout at their virtual assistant. Texas comes in second with 71%, followed by Ohio at 68%. On the other end, Oregon is the calmest state, with only 17% of residents reporting frustration-induced outbursts.
“I’m Not Sure I Understand”
The primary cause of conflict with virtual assistants is clear: a significant 77% of users cite misunderstandings of commands as their main source of frustration. Unexpected answers account for 10% of the annoyance, while 8% are particularly irked by incorrect responses.
When the tech fails to comprehend a command, persistence is a common strategy. According to the survey, 39% of respondents keep repeating their request until the assistant gets it right. Nearly the same number, 38%, try rephrasing their query in hopes of achieving clarity. However, some users reach a breaking point: 13% give up entirely, 5% switch to a different assistant, and 4% bypass the virtual assistant altogether, opting to handle the task themselves.
Impact on Usage
Despite the convenience virtual assistants offer, miscommunication issues have a tangible impact on their usage. The survey notes that 51% of respondents use their virtual assistant less frequently due to these frustrations.
