AI Technology Could Increase Global Warming, Expert Warns

“Each step forward in AI might be a step backward for our planet’s climate,” says Philipp Pratt, an innovation expert from Geonode, revealing an often-overlooked consequence of the latest technological advancements.

AI innovations are the most celebrated technology advancements today. Yet, it’s not without significant environmental costs. Advanced AI systems require immense computing power. This translates directly to high energy consumption and (consequently) substantial carbon emissions.

In exploring this link, we unveil a complex challenge intertwining technology and environmental sustainability.

The Energy-Hungry Process

AI’s revolutionary innovations — from autonomous vehicles to sophisticated healthcare algorithms — are powered by data centers. And, per a study, global data centers consume 240 to 340 TWh. As we know, this energy comes from power grids that still rely heavily on fossil fuels.

Moreover, a study revealed that training a single AI model could emit as much carbon as five cars over their lifetimes. In a recent interview, Nvidia’s CEO confirmed that AI training and interference demand massive energy.

Currently, AI research and applications require three computers to train the technology. So, combining these factors equates to huge power consumption.

Ripple Effect

Precise statistics on AI’s contribution to global warming are difficult to pinpoint. Yet, some models suggest a significant increase in global temperatures directly linked to the technological sector’s expansion. A report warns the IT sector could account for as much as 14% of the worldwide carbon footprint by 2040. If unchecked, this growth could see AI becoming an accelerator for climate change instead of a mitigating tool.

Here are some impacts outlined by Pratt:

  • Increase in Greenhouse Gases: Data centers are vital for AI. Reports highlight they account for about 3% of global electricity and 4% by 2030, with corresponding greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Resource Depletion: AI technologies rely heavily on rare earth metals and other resources, which are finite and extraction-intensive, leading to severe ecological disturbances.
  • Waste Production: Recent advances in AI-powered automation have led to the rise of fast fashion and electronic waste. This process results in overproduction and waste, contributing to further environmental damage.

Pratt warns, “Continous AI innovations could exacerbate global warming at a scale and speed previously unaccounted for.”

What Should You Do as a Consumer?

Innovation is part of a developing society. However, consumers, too, have a critical role. We can influence change by:

  • Supporting Responsible Companies: Choose services and products from companies committed to reducing environmental impacts.
  • Staying Informed: Understand the environmental costs associated with the technology used.
  • Advocacy: Propagate the dialogue about sustainable AI and push for regulations that encourage greener technologies.

Every innovation, and every advancement in AI, needs evaluation for its technological, economic, and (most importantly) environmental impact. The journey toward sustainable AI is a necessity and responsibility that innovators, consumers, and policymakers must share.

Pratt encourages us to reflect on this question: Will we allow AI to repeat the mistakes of our industrial past, or will we steer this powerful tool toward a sustainable future that benefits all?
